Clinical Psychology

WHAT IS CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY?

Clinical psychology is an integration of science, theory and clinical knowledge for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically based distress or dysfunction and to promote subjective well-being and personal development.

Psychological Assessment is the process of systematic collection, organization and interpretation of information about a person and his situation and helps to predict the persons behavior in a new situation.

Mental Retardation refers to SIGNIFICANTLY SUB AVERAGE GENERAL INTELLECTUAL FUNCTIONING, resulting in or associated with concurrent IMPAIRMENTS IN ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOUR and manifested during the DEVELOPMENTAL PERIOD.

There are three important areas of assessment in persons with Mental Retardation.

  • Measurement of the overall level of general intellectual functioning (DQ / IQ / PQ)
  • Assessment of Adaptive Behaviour.
  • Detailed analysis of individual abilities and deficits.

Psychological assessment helps in the process of diagnosis (e.g. - Mental Retardation) Classification (Eg. : Mild Mental Retardation, Moderate Mental Retardation etc.,) and for intervention / Management plans (Eg. : Behaviour modification therapy, self help skills)
